Friday Photo – New Horizons in Warrnambool

October 26, 2018 By Doug

We took our first trip to Australia as a break from some really stressful events, and drove the great ocean road to Warrnambool.  The B&B there had the most amazing orange cake in the mornings, but in the evening, we just took a walk along the coast to watch the sunset.

That’s when I saw this one lone gull, looking out at the ocean and facing the breeze.  I imagine that he was pausing to gather his strength before flying into the wind across uncharted waters, ready to ride wherever the currents led.  It’s not a particularly creative or artistically significant image, yet it’s one that really hit home given our own left turn in life.

So to all the gulls out there about to launch into new horizons, may the wind be at your back and the seas calm under your course.

Friday Photo: Here’s looking at Emu

October 5, 2018 By Doug

The first time we went to Tower Hill in Victoria, Australia, I was just starting to get into photography.  We went in the middle of the day, and the critters were few and far between.  Since then, my technique has improved, and this time we went at dusk, when they were really active.  There was a flock (herd?) of emu wandering around near the parking lot, so I had time to practice shooting – trying to get the focus on the eye.  For some reason, they just wouldn’t hold still long enough, but this one gave me a couple of chances.

Friday Photo: Summer on an Alaskan Beach

August 24, 2018 By Doug

We set out from Valdez for a day-long cruise into Prince William Sound on the Lulu Belle (highly recommended if you’re there).  It was a beautiful day, crisp and cold – just like how I enjoy July, when we came upon these guys sunning themselves on a classic “Alaskan Beach”.  They looked at the crazy humans bundled up, then just rolled over and dived into the brisk water.
