Friday Photo – Life in a Moab Canyon

The Utah desert may appear barren, but if you look closer you'll see that life finds a way, sometimes clinging to the walls of a canyon.  I was hiking back to the truck at the end of a shoot, and happened across this scene on the side of canyon.   The sun was setting and [...]

Friday Photo – Moab in the Rain

First of all, Moab is a terrible, ugly place that no one should ever visit - certainly not the hordes of people loving Arches National Park to death :-). Seriously, it's an amazing location, with iconic scenery - you can almost see the Duke as he rides across the skyline.  We were there for the [...]

Friday Photo – Bath from Bath Abbey

I really enjoy shooting panoramic photographs - there's no better way to capture the scope and scale of a scene.  Normally this involves a tripod, leveling and pano heads, and a lot of fiddling - none of which can you do while on tour at the top of an ancient Abbey in Bath, UK.  This [...]

Friday Photo – Critters in Alaskan Waters

On our first trip to Alaska, we visited Valdez and Prince William Sound.  It's a real fishing town, with an influx of tourists staying mostly in RV's and a few motels and B&B's, that reminded us of what the Colorado mountain towns were like back when we were growing up. We wanted to take a [...]

Iconic Yellowstone

A few years back my wife and I toured Yellowstone before meeting my dad for a fly fishing boat trip.  It was a beautiful afternoon, warm and sunny, with the shadows just starting to appear.  The moon came over the horizon, and this guy looked up at me - a classic Yellowstone postcard. There were [...]

Truffles

Friday Photo – Hound in the Snow

We lost Truffles this week.  He was our sweet springer spaniel, a two year old heart in a 13 year old body.  Feisty and sweet, easy going and fierce.  Our cats are sleeping on the dog bed, waiting for him to come by to snuggle, and our golden is running upstairs to find him (and [...]

Rain Forest Fern

Maybe it's because I live in an arid climate, but the rain forest has always fascinated me.  The lush foliage grows so fast you can almost watch it uncurl.  These emerging ferns are a particular favorite - I love how the light glows through them, softened by the overhead canopy.

Alaskan Eagle in the Mist

This image combines two things I've been fortunate to see several times over the years - Alaska, and bald eagles in the wild.  Both stir the soul and touch the wild in all our hearts.  The second day of our boat tours into Prince William Sound was cold, rainy and cloudy.  I was set to [...]

Lily at the Hilo Zoo

I admit it, I'm a sucker for lily ponds.  I'm not sure if it's because I really liked Kermit as a kid, or just the serenity of the scene (or maybe a bit of both).  The Hilo zoo has an amazing pond, and it's been in bloom every time I visit. Now all I need [...]

Welsh Angel

Every once in a while, a quick snapshot turns out to be far more than expected.  I snapped this of my wife on a whim while we were walking down the street in Llandudno, Wales.  Her family has roots there, and we'd been visiting - it's an incredibly peaceful city, just the right place to [...]
