Friday Photo – Moon over Edinburgh

September 15, 2017 By Doug

This weeks Friday Photo is from Edinburgh, one of my favorite cities to visit.   The Scots are frugal (they only fire the cannon to mark 1:00 instead of 12, as it saves ammunition), friendly, and have a hardy outlook on life.  I’m convinced that loving bagpipes must be genetic, and I’m happy to have gotten that gene from my folks.

Unfortunately, the Royal Mile is now infested with a chain of cheap souvenir shops all selling the same imported trinkets and junk.  If you look hard, you can still find locally owned shops selling authentic Scottish goods, and it’s well worth the effort.

On a better note, the cuisine in Edinburgh is improved immensely since my first visit.  The foodies can rejoice – they used Scottish frugality and french techniques to create the most amazing dishes.  For me, I’ll stick with pub food…and avoid the haggis!

Friday Photo – In honor of the breach, monsters at the gate – Urquhart Castle & Loch Ness

September 8, 2017 By Doug

In honor of the big breach this week, I went through the archives looking for an image of a castle in ruins.  Couldn’t have found a more apropos image than this one of Castle Urquhart and Loch Ness.   There be monsters here!

Much of our security infrastructure is based on building a controlled perimeter, much as the engineers of Urquhart did on the shoreline.  That’s important for sure, but what happens once your walls are breached, the bad guys are inside?    Are you only relying moats and castles to protect your critical assets, or do you have watchtowers, patrols, and a garrison stationed inside, ready to respond?

Something to think about when the monsters come.

Friday Photo – Scottish Cow on Skye

September 1, 2017 By Doug

Every once in a while there’s a image that you just find cool and can’t put your finger on it.  This Scottish cow on the Isle of Skye was munching along side the road.  It was raining pretty good, so I had my wife roll down the window and grabbed a couple of quick shots across the inside of the car.  I thought the solution to the barbed wire was pretty neat.
